Epigram – সুভাষিত (not সুবাসিত) বাঁ সংক্ষিপ্ত ও সরস বচন

ইংরেজীতে এপিগ্রাম হল সংক্ষিপ্ত সাধারণ ক্ষুরধার হাস্যরসাত্মক বক্তব্য। পরিশীলিত ভঙ্গিমায় উদ্ভাবনী চিন্তা চেতনা। epigram শব্দটি গ্রীক্ শব্দ Epigramma থেকে এসেছে। যার অর্থ শিলালিপি, খচিত বাঁ খোদাই করা ইত্যাদি।

The epigram is a brief, sharp, witty and polished saying which expresses a striking thought, অর্থাৎ epigram হচ্ছে একটা সংক্ষিপ্ত, তীক্ষ্ণ, বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত এবং চমৎকার কথা যার মাধ্যমে কোনো আকর্ষণীয় ধারণা প্রকাশ পায়।

কবি Coleridge এভাবে epigram কে সংজ্ঞায়িত করেছেন।

What is an epigram? A dwarfish whole:

Its body brevity, and wit its soul.

অর্থাৎ আকারে ছোট হলেও epigram-এর অন্তর্নিহিত ভাবটা খুব গভীর।

এখানে আলেকজান্ডার পোপ এর লেখা থেকে উদাহরণ টানা যেতে

we think our father fools, so wise we grow

Our wiser sons, No doubt, will think us so

এখানে একটি মজাদার বিষয় উপস্থাপিত হয়েছে, আমরা ভাবছি আমাদের পিতা বোকা আবার এক সময় আমার ছেলেরাও আমার সম্পর্কে ভাববে আমার পিতা বোকা, আমরাই জ্ঞানী।

নীচের epigram গুলো লক্ষ কর:

There is a pleasure in poetic pains.

Failures are the pillars of success.

The paths of glory lead but to the grave.

The child is father of the man.

Cowards die many times before their death.

Antithesis-এর মত epigram-এর মধ্যে একটা Contradiction বা বৈপরীত্য থাকে কিন্তু সে বৈপরীত্য real নয়, শুধু বাহ্যিক। Epigram-এর বক্তব্যকে apparent বা আপাতঃ বিরোধী মনে হয় কিন্তু একটু গভীরভাবে চিন্তা করলেই বিরোধী ভাবটার অবসান ঘটে এবং তার মধ্যে লুক্কায়িত গভীর সত্যটা বেরিয়ে আসে। “The child is father of the man.”

বক্তব্যটিকে আপাতঃদৃষ্টিতে বিস্ময়কর মনে হতে পারে। মনে প্রশ্ন জাগতে পারে, child কিভাবে মানষের father হবে। কিন্তু গভীরভাবে চিন্তা করলে এই বক্তব্য থেকে একটা Philosophical truth বা দার্শনিক সত্য বেরিয়ে আসবে। কবি Wordsworth এখানে বুঝিয়েছেন যে, একটা child এর চরিত্র বিশ্লেষণ করলেই তার মধ্যে ভবিষ্যৎ পিতার লক্ষণ পাওয়া যাবে।

নিচে বিখ্যাত ব্যক্তিদের কথা থেকে Epigram এর কয়েকটি উদাহরণ দেয়া হল।

 “Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put and end to mankind.” – John F. Kennedy

“If we don’t end war, war will end us.” – G. Wells

“It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

“A word to the wise ain’t necessary; it’s the stupid ones who need all the advice.” – Bill Cosby

“Live simply, so that others may simply live.” – Mother Teresa

“I’m starting with the man in the mirror.” – Michael Jackson

“This is the moment when we must come together to save this planet. Let us resolve that we will not leave our children a world where the oceans rise and famine spreads and terrible storms devastate our lands.” – Barack Obama

মোট কথা, কোন ছোট খাট কবিতায় হাস্যরস জোগান দিতেই এপিগ্রাম ব্যবহৃত হয়।
