ব্যস্ত বৃদ্ধ বোকা, অবাধ্য সূর্য,

কেন তুমি এমন (আচড়ন) কর,

জানালা দিয়ে, পর্দা ভেদ করে আমাদের কেন ডাকো?

তোমার গতির সাথে মিল রেখেই কি ভালোবাসতে হবে?

উদ্ধত, দাম্ভিক, দুরাত্মা, যাও ভৎসনা কর

দেরি করা স্কুল বালকদের, বেয়াড়া শিক্ষানবীশদের,

যাও, রাজার শিকারিদের বল, রাজা যাবেন শিকারে,

পিঁপড়াগুলোকে ডাক এবং শস্য কণা আহরণের কথা বল;

ভালোবাসা, ইহার কোন সময় নেই, দেশ নেই,

ঘণ্টা নেই, দিনক্ষণ নেই, মাস নেই, এসবই তো মহাকালের ছেড়া ন্যাকড়া।

তোমার রশ্মি উজ্জ্বল, জোরাল।

তুমি নিজেকে কি মনে কর?

আমি পারি ম্লান, মেঘাচ্ছন্ন করে দিতে এক পলকে তোমার সকল আলো,

কিন্তু ততক্ষণ আমার প্রিয়ার দৃষ্টি হতে আমি বঞ্চিত হতে চাই না;

যদি তার দৃষ্টিতে তোমার দৃষ্টি অন্ধ না হয়ে যায়,

তবে আমাকে বল, আগামীকাল দিনের শেষে,

মশলা আর সোনার খনির দুই ইন্ডিজ।

যেখানে তুমি রেখে এসেছিলে, সেখানে আছে? না কি এখানে আমার সাথে?

যেসব রাজাদের দেখেছিলে গতকাল

তাদের কথা সবাই শোন, এখন তারা সবাই এই বিছানায়।

আমার প্রেয়সীই এখন সকল রাজ্য, আমিই সকল রাজকুমার,

অন্য কিছু নই।

রাজকুমারদের কর্ম তুচ্ছ খেলা, আমাদের তুলনায়,

নকল, সকল সম্মান, সকল সম্পদ।

সূর্য তুমি আমাদের সুখের অর্ধেক নিয়ে যাও,

কারণ সারা বিশ্ব এখানে সংকুচিত;

বৃদ্ধ বয়সে তোমার আরাম দরকার, যেহেতু তোমার কর্তব্য

পৃথিবীকে উষ্ণ রাখা, আমাদেরকে উষ্ণ রাখলেই সেটা হয়ে যাবে।

আমাদেরকে উদ্ভাসিত করলে সারা পৃথিবী উদ্ভাসিত হবে;

এই বিছানাটাই তো তোমার কেন্দ্র, এই দেয়ালই তো তোমার কক্ষপথ।

17. Alchemy - figuratively, not the real thing. The speculative practice of alchemy involved a search for chemically turning base metals, such as iron, into highly valuable metals, such as gold.
