It is an ancient Mariner, 

And he stoppeth one of three. 

'By thy long grey beard and glittering eye, 

Now wherefore stopp'st thou me? 

অতিশয় বৃদ্ধ এক নাবিক,

থামিয়ে দিল সে তিনজনের একজনকে।

“তোমার লম্বা ধূসর দাড়ি আর উজ্জ্বল চোখ দিয়ে,

আমায় এখানে থামালে কেন?

The Bridegroom's doors are opened wide, 

And I am next of kin; 

The guests are met, the feast is set: 

May'st hear the merry din.' 

বরের ঘরের দরজা পুরো খোলা,

আর আমি হই তার নিকটাত্মীয়;

অতিথিরা এলো সবে, ভোজসভা উল্লসিত

শুনছ না তার মুখরিত সঙ্গীত”।

He holds him with his skinny hand, 

'There was a ship,' quoth he. 

'Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!' 

Eftsoons his hand dropt he. 

ধরে রাখল তাকে অস্থিচির্মসার হাতে,

“একটা জাহাজ ছিল,” সে বলল।

“ছাড়ো! হাত ছাড়ো মোর, ধূসর দাড়িওয়ালা অসভ্য!”

বলতেই ছেড়ে দিল হাত।

He holds him with his glittering eye— 

The Wedding-Guest stood still, 

And listens like a three years' child: 

The Mariner hath his will. 

এবার তারে রাখল ধরে জ্বলজ্বলে চোখ দিয়ে

দাড়িয়ে থাকল বরযাত্রী স্থিরভাবে,

শুনল তার কথা ঠিক তিন বছরের শিশুর মতো

নাবিকের ইচ্ছানুযায়ী।

The Wedding-Guest sat on a stone: 

He cannot choose but hear; 

And thus spake on that ancient man, 

The bright-eyed Mariner. 

বয়যাত্রী বসল একটা পাথরের উপরে;

না শুনে যে উপায় নেই তার;

বৃদ্ধ লোকটি বলে যেতে থাকে,

যে উজ্জ্বল চোখওয়ালা নাবিক।

'The ship was cheered, the harbour cleared, 

Merrily did we drop 

Below the kirk, below the hill, 

Below the lighthouse top. 

“সেদিন জাহাজ ছিল উল্লসিত, পোতাশ্রয় পরিষ্কার,

চলমান আমরা আনন্দে

গির্জার তলদেশ, পাহাড়ের তলদেশ,

বাতি ঘরের তলদেশ দিয়ে।

The Sun came up upon the left, 

Out of the sea came he! 

And he shone bright, and on the right 

Went down into the sea. 

উঠল রবি বাম দিক হতে,

সাগর হতে আসল উঠে সে,

কিরণ দিল উজ্জ্বল আভায়, কিরণ দিল ডানদিকে

তারপর ডুবল আবার সাগর জলে।

Higher and higher every day, 

Till over the mast at noon—' 

The Wedding-Guest here beat his breast, 

For he heard the loud bassoon.

প্রতিদিন উঁচু থেকে উঁচুতে উঠে

যতক্ষণ না গলুই যেত ডিঙিয়ে মধ্যদিনে”

এটুকু শুনে বরযাত্রী আপসোসে চাপড়ায় বুক,

শুনতে পায় সে শানাইয়ের সুর উচ্চরবে।

The bride hath paced into the hall, 

Red as a rose is she; 

Nodding their heads before her goes 

The merry minstrelsy. 

কনে এবার উঠে এলো আসরে,

গোলাপ-লালে রাঙা যেমন সে;

মাথা ঝুকিয়ে যায় তার কাছে দিয়ে।

আনন্দিত গায়ক যন্ত্রীদল।

The Wedding-Guest he beat his breast, 

Yet he cannot choose but hear; 

And thus spake on that ancient man, 

The bright-eyed Mariner. 

বরযাত্রী বুক চাপড়ে মরে,

না শুনে উপায় নেই তাই সে শোনে;

And now the STORM-BLAST came, and he 

Was tyrannous and strong: 

He struck with his o'ertaking wings, 

And chased us south along. 

“ঝঞ্জা ফেটে পড়ে আক্রোশে

স্বৈরাচারী পরাক্রান্ত শক্তিতে

দিকজোড়া তার ডানার ঝাপটানিতে,

আমাদের নিয়ে এলো দক্ষিণ দিকে।

With sloping masts and dipping prow, 

As who pursued with yell and blow 

Still treads the shadow of his foe, 

And forward bends his head, 

The ship drove fast, loud roared the blast, 

And southward aye we fled. 

নত মাস্তুল আর ডুবন্ত গলুই,

তারস্বরে চিৎকারে

শত্রুর ছায়া যেন মাড়িয়ে চলে,

শির তার ঝুঁকে পড়ে সামনে,

জাহাজ এগোয় দ্রুত আর ঝড় গরজায় পিছে,

পালাতে চলেছি মোরা দক্ষিণ দিকে।

And now there came both mist and snow, 

And it grew wondrous cold: 

And ice, mast-high, came floating by, 

As green as emerald. 

এবার এলো হিম কুহেলী আর তুষার সম্প্রপাত,

আর এটা ছিল অসম্ভব ঠাণ্ডা

ভেসে ভেসে আসে বরফ মাস্কুল বরাবর,

সবুজ মণিসম পান্না যেন।

And through the drifts the snowy clifts 

Did send a dismal sheen: 

Nor shapes of men nor beasts we ken— 

The ice was all between.

ছড়ায় বিষন্ন উজ্জ্বল প্রভা

না কোন মানুষ দেখি, না কোন জন্তু

চতুর্দিকে বরফ আর বরফ ।

The ice was here, the ice was there, 

The ice was all around: 

It cracked and growled, and roared and howled, 

Like noises in a swound! 

এদিকে বরফ, সেদিকে বরফ,

চতুর্দিকে শুধু বরফ

ফাটে বরফ রাগে গর গর গরজায়,

মূর্ছা যাবার শব্দ!

At length did cross an Albatross, 

Thorough the fog it came; 

As if it had been a Christian soul, 

We hailed it in God's name. 

অবশেষে এলো সিম্ধুসারস অ্যালবেট্রস,

কুয়াশার ভেতর দিয়ে এলো পাখিটি;

এসেছে যেন ঈসার(আঃ) আত্মা,

বিধাতার নামে তাকে জানালাম সম্ভাসন।

It ate the food it ne'er had eat, 

And round and round it flew. 

The ice did split with a thunder-fit; 

The helmsman steered us through! 

পাখিটি খাবার খেল যে খাবার পায়নি কভু আগে,

আর উড়ল সে ঘুরে ঘুরে পাটাতনে।

ফাটল বরফ বজ্রনাদে

কান্ডারী তবু নিয়ে চলেছে আমাদের।

And a good south wind sprung up behind; 

The Albatross did follow, 

And every day, for food or play, 

Came to the mariner's hollo! 

সুখের দক্ষিনা বাতাস ছুটল পেছন থেকে

অ্যালবেট্রসও অনুসরণ করল আমাদের।

প্রতিদিন, খেলতে খেলতে খাবারের জন্যে।

 আসতো সে প্রতিদিন নাবিকের দর্শনে।  

In mist or cloud, on mast or shroud, 

It perched for vespers nine; 

Whiles all the night, through fog-smoke white, 

Glimmered the white Moon-shine.' 

কুয়াশা কিংবা মেঘে, মাস্তুলে নতুবা পালের কাছিতে,

বসলো পাখি ক্রমাগত নয়টি সন্ধ্যা বেলায়;

অগাধ কুয়াশার ধোঁয়ায় ঢাকা সারারাত,

তারই মাঝে জ্বলে জোছনা।

'God save thee, ancient Mariner! 

From the fiends, that plague thee thus!— 

Why look'st thou so?'—With my cross-bow 

I shot the ALBATROSS. 

“বুড়ো নাবিক, আল্লাহ তোমাকে রক্ষা করুক!

পিশাচের হাত থেকে-যারা তোমাকে ভোগাচ্ছে এমন!

তুমি অমন কেন তাকাও?”- আমার তীর ধনুকে
